RE: 460 ford using lots of oil

The PCV valve is a possibility, cheap and quick to replace. If that doesn't help it is time for a compression test, pay close attention to each spark plug. I can't imagine an engine leaking that much without it dripping. You posted there is an oily film on the back of the mh, wipe your finger around the inside of the tail pipe. If it is black and dry, good, if it is oily, not good.

RE: How much power to run heater?

But- you will need adapters to go from 50 amp to (probably) the 15 amp outlet. Without them you won't be able to plug in.

RE: New water heater needed!

I don't think it much matters which you buy so long as it's no bigger. Atwood 6 gal. heaters need a 12-5/8" x 16-1/4" rough opening, and Suburban, Mor-Flo, and American 6 gal. heaters fit a 12-3/4" x 12-3/4" rough opening. Replacing an Atwood with a Suburban is easy, but not the other way around. Sounds logical. It would be a lot easier to make the opening larger than figure what to do to fill the gap.

RE: Gas heater blower weak ?

At home you are probably heating close to 12000 cubic feet of air, in the rv less than a thousand. If the rv furnace moved as much air it would always feel cold. Unless the sail switch has been jumpered out of the circuit the furnace is ok. If the blower doesn't get up to speed and close the sail switch the furnace won't operate.

RE: Coach Weight Distribution

Getting the weights is a good idea. A refrigerator could easily be counter balanced by many things, batteries, hydraulic system, etc. You need to look at the placement of everything from the roof to the basement compartments, not just the portion of the house you live in.

RE: New water heater needed!

I wouldn't worry as much about who took them over as the opening size as tom_kat said. The brand that is closest to fitting the opening will make replacement a lot easier. There is no guarantee which ever company did take them over used any dimensions from Mor-flo, they might have got them cheap for the parts on hand.

RE: Do you run your genset every month during winter?

(it will not be able to be pulled out during the snow months) How do you put a load on your generator. If you back it in you will be surprised how much snow it will go thru with the back tires on a dry surface. Pull it out far enough to get the generator exhaust a few feet outside the door. A couple of electric heaters and a fan make a good load and will help dry everything up.

RE: I saved you late season campers

You need to move further north next time you winterize. I've already had a couple of nights with thin layers of ice on my pond, it's definitely going to freeze well before Christmas.

RE: Economics One O One.

I keep noticing some using of the word greed, when posting about others doing better economically than themselves. This puzzles me. When you want more or have more than me, that's greedy.......when I want and have more than you, there's no way that's considered greed. I'm worth all I can get! Not. When you sign a contract giving you millions to go away because the job you were hired to do is beyond your capability that is greed. And you probably operated the corporation the with the same ethic, increasing prices, cheapening the product, damaging the corporation's long term future. I worked for a lot of years with an undated signed voluntary quit letter in my personnel file, as any person with any responsibility should. If you can't do your job you should be unceremoniously gone, no big check to slide off quietly into the sunset. I could care less how much money another person has, but I do sometimes have a problem with how they got it.Exhibit A Care to elaborate, your response made no sense to me???

RE: Economics One O One.

It is interesting, the psychologoy of human beings. Being that it is your own economy, no one wants to admit its short falls, errors, or that fact that a few made a lot of money and the majority lost out. Where I live, others from outside like to run it into the ground and constantly remind us how bad we are and how the other side is so much better. I think now a little of "our own medicine" goes a long way. Being humble is a trait hard to live up to. JMHO And we should be "humble" because? America will be the last to fall and we didn't get that staying power by having useless traits like humility! Staying power? What is a nation formed in 1776 going to prove to most other nations about staying power? Their histories began a thousand or more years before ours. There is nothing wrong with a little humility at times, it gives you a chance to be introspective and factually assess strengths and weaknesses. To blindly state we will be the last to fall ignores the lessons of history. There have been hundreds of powerful cities, city/states, nations, rulers, all have fallen eventually, others have risen to replace them. Myself, I have seen no guarantee anywhere America is the ultimate, final, most powerful nation. And without the humility to realize we can improve and must improve we don't guarantee our survival.

RE: Transmission Cooler Line Leak

I am going to try a small hose clamp, as I want to go RVing Tuesday, if I take it to a shop I won't see the RV for a week. A lot of aftermarket tranny coolers are hooked that way. Cut the section with the hose out, go to a parts store and tell them you need some hose that will stand up to the fluid and pressure of the trans. I would use 2 hose clamps on each end, install them 180º to each other.

RE: Painting Vinyl Graphics

Paint is only as good as what it is applied over. If the graphics are cracking and peeling the paint will soon do the same.

RE: What kills a motor home?

Leaks are probably more labor intensive to repair than anything. If the house is solid, if the owner commits to maintaining the motor home, repairing/rebuilding engines and transmissions makes sense. A bad leak will require major disassembly, a lot of time, a large covered building to repair. I don't think functional obsolescence would be a concern with units built before the early to mid 90's. Those were relatively simple and don't have sophisticated components or systems that won't be supported by vendors in the future. Tin Can Tourists, WBCCI members have trailers some of which are over 60 years old and still used. Many classic cars of the same age are driven the same miles each year as a lot of rvs. I don't see why an older motor home couldn't have a lot of use if the owner committed to maintenance.

RE: Trace/Xantrex Inverter Woes

You cannot test the RC with a phone cable. The RC uses a data cable that is wired different than a phone cable. Also the rocker switch on the inverter needs to "on" for the remote to work. Both true. And if someone at Xantrex told you that the cable is a phone cable they need to go back to school. The ends are flipped 180º to each other, pin 1 is pin 4, pin 2 is pin 3, etc.

RE: Let's see your inverter installation pics!!

http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l139/reconstructor24/Inverter.jpg http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l139/reconstructor24/IMG_2604.jpg The right of the top picture and left of the bottom picture are a common divider between the battery compartment and a bay. Power flow is from shore/generator to the ATS to the inverter to the main breaker box so all circuits are powered.

RE: Indiana RV Manufacturers Closing

A lot shorter list to read would be what manufacturers are maintaining 100% production. These are shipment figures thru Sep 2008. It shouldn't be too hard to understand any manufacturers who haven't gone out of business already are having a hard time.

RE: Cooking and Heating: Propane vs Electric?

Am I to understand that these appliances would significantly use up (or waste) my battery's storage capacity? Unless you are at a site with shore power the standard battery set won't be close to providing the power needed to run 120v appliances. There are all electric motor homes but they are big diesels with a lot of space and weight capacity to carry a lot of big batteries and a big generator to recharge them. You will also need to consider the cost (and weight) of a couple of big inverters to run everything on 120v. It can be done but is not a viable trade off to propane in most cases.

RE: Do you know how to clean my stove top??

Mine is older and has a pilot, the stove top is hinged, lift the stove top to light the pilot. Does your stove top lift so you can see how the grid is attached? Most I have seen have metal clips that fit tightly to keep rattles to a minimum.

RE: December trip Ohio to Florida - Snow Travel Likely????

I am from Michigan so driving in snow is a fact of life a lot of months a year. I got caught in a really heavy wet snow in Atlanta a few years ago. Everything I had heard about drivers in areas of the country that do not get snow not understanding how to drive in snow is true. Be very cautious if you get into snow in one of these areas, they will do stupid things more times than you can imagine.
